IMO – Athens Convention to enter into force in 2014

The IMO issued a
news release stating that the Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea, 2002, will enter into force on 23 April 2014, following the recent ratification by Belgium. Ten ratifications have been received to date. The Athens Convention substantially raises the limits of liability for the death of, or personal injury to, a passenger on a covered ship. The Convention shifts the burden of proof to the effect that, to escape liability, the carrier must demonstrate that the loss was not due to its fault or neglect. (4/25/13).
