USCG – heavy fuel oil in the Arctic
clip_image016 The US Coast Guard issued a bulletin summarizing the recent listening session regarding Heavy Fuel Oil in the Arctic. The purpose of the session was to exchange information regarding: (1) environmental risks to Arctic waters posed by HFO use by ships; (2) potential measures that could be taken to reduce those risks; and (3) development, sustainment, and economics of communities that would be directly affected by such measures. Senate – bill introduced to improve maritime security

Indian Ocean – polymetallic sulphide exploration contract
clip_image024 The International Seabed Authority (ISA) issued a news release stating that it and the Government of India have signed a 15-year exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides. The application area, located in the central Indian Ocean, covers 10,000 square kilometers. clip_image028 The Government of Canada issued a news release announcing that the recently discovered wreck in Terror Bay off King William Island in Nunavut has been confirmed to be that of the HMS Terror. Terror and Erebus were part of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition that attempted to navigate the Northwest Passage in the nineteenth century. Parks Canada will work closely with Inuit in Nunavut and government organizations on the matter of joint-ownership of artifacts from HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.
