Chukchi Sea – conditional drilling permits issued
clip_image006 The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) issued a press release [located at http://www.bsee.gov/BSEE-Newsroom/BSEE-News-Briefs/2015/BSEE-Approves-Limited-Drilling-Activities-in-Arctic-Waters-Under-Rigorous-Safety-Requirements/] stating that conditional approval has been given to two Applications for Permits to Drill (APD) by Shell to conduct limited exploratory drilling activities in the Chukchi Sea offshore Alaska. The APDs limit Shell to drilling only the top sections of wells and prohibit Shell from drilling into oil-bearing zones until the capping stack is on hand and deployable within 24 hours. (7/22/15).
Senate – bill introduced to prohibit Arctic Ocean drilling
clip_image010 Senator Merkley (D-OR) introduced the Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act of 2105 (S. 1794) [located at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-114s1794is/pdf/BILLS-114s1794is.pdf] to prohibit drilling in the Arctic Ocean.
