House – hearing on DHS strategy
clip_image013[1] The Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and management of the House Committee on Homeland Security conducted a hearing on the strategy of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Subcommittee Chairman Michael T. McCaul (R-TX) made an opening statement. Mr. Paul A. Schneider, The Chertoff Group, testified that limited resources are available to DHS to address the biological, cyber, and nuclear threats facing the United States. Ms. Sharon A. Caudle, Texas A&M University, testified that DHS should adopt an anticipatory approach toward addressing emerging threats such as those posed by fragile and failing states and dependence on fossil fuels. Mr. Shawn Reese, Congressional Research Service, testified that the United States Government does not have a universal view of homeland security. Mr. David C. Maurer, Government Accountability Office, testified that DHS should expend greater effort in consulting its various stakeholders and considering their recommendations. Mr. Alan Cohn, Department of Homeland Security, testified that the Department is implementing a strategy to counter emerging threats, but that the threats continue to evolve. (2/3/12).
IMO – sympathy for Rabaul Queen victims
clip_image017 The IMO issued a news release stating that Secretary-General Sekimizu has extended deep sympathy for victims of the sinking of the passenger ferry Rabaul Queen in waters off Papua New Guinea. He also expressed his appreciation for all those participating in the rescue efforts. (2/3/12).
EC – review of passenger ship safety rules
