NOAA – DEIS oil and gas activities in Arctic Ocean
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a
notice updating its prior information regarding the Draft Environmental
Impact Statement (DEIS) for the effects of oil and gas activities in the
Arctic Ocean. Public meetings will be held in the communities of
Barrow, Kaktovik, Kivalina, Kotzebue, Nuiqsut, Point Hope, Point Lay,
and Wainwright between January 30 and February 10. A public meeting will
also be held in Anchorage on February 13. Written comments should be
submitted by February 28. 77 Fed. Reg. 2513 (January 18, 2012).
CEQ – National Ocean Policy Draft Implementation Plan
The Council on environmental Quality CEQ) is seeking comments on the National Ocean Policy Draft Implementation Plan.
The plan describes more than 50 actions the federal government can take
to improve the health of the oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes. Comments
on the draft plan should be submitted by February 27. 77 Fed. Reg. 2514 (January 18, 2012).
Alaska – Nome fuel delivery participants commended
Alaska Lieutenant Governor Treadwell issued a news release
commending the crews of the Russian tanker RENDA and the Coast Guard
icebreaker HEALY, as well as the many others who participated in the
successful mission to deliver fuel oil to the iced-in city of Nome.

UK – Hydrographic Office statement re COSTA CONCORDIA grounding
The UK Hydrographic Office issued a statement
regarding the grounding of the cruise ship COSTA CONCORDIA. The UKHO’s
most detailed chart of the area in which the vessel grounded is Chart
1999 at a scale of 1:300 000, which is up to date for all relevant
information known to the UKHO. It should be noted that this small scale
chart is considered unsuitable for close inshore navigation. Larger
scale paper charts, produced by the Italian hydrographic service, are
available. The official digital charts are Italian with larger scales
