Arabian Sea – Iranian fishermen rescued from pirates by US Navy
The US Navy issued a news release
stating that the USS Kidd (DDG 100) rescued an Iran fishing vessel and
its crew of 13 from pirates in the northern Arabian Sea. A suspected
pirate skiff was observed alongside the fishing vessel when a distress
call was received from the fishing vessel’s master. A visit, board,
search, and seizure (VBSS) team from the Kidd boarded the fishing vessel
and detained 15 suspected pirates. The suspected pirates have been
transferred to the USS Stennis (CVN 74). (1/6/12). Note: Possibly the suspected pirates could be transferred to Iran for prosecution.
US & UK – Carrier Cooperation and Maritime Power Projection
The Department of Defense (DOD) issued a news release
stating that Secretary Leon Panetta and British Secretary of State for
Defence Phillip Hammond signed a Statement of Intent on Carrier
Cooperation and Maritime Power Projection that will serve as the
framework for increased cooperation and interoperability on the use of
aircraft carriers. (1/6/12).
Alaska – Governor proposes exporting LNG to Asia
The Alaska Governor’s Office issued a press release
stating that Governor Sean Parnell met with the chief executive
officers from BP, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil to discuss
commercializing the North Slope’s natural gas reserves. The Governor
proposes that the three companies work together on developing a
liquefied natural gas (LNG) project focused on exporting Alaska North
Slope gas to Asia. (1/5/12).
California – proposed amendment of biofouling regulations
The California State Lands Commission (SLC) issued a Notice
stating that it proposes to amend its regulations for the management of
biofouling for vessels in California waters. Comments on the Proposed Regulations should be submitted by January 28, 2012. (12/29/11). Fonte: Dennis Bryant.
