UK – ship-barge collision in heavy weather
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued the report of its investigation of the collision of the general cargo ship Saga Sky and the rock carrying barge Stema Barge II on 20 November 2016 off the south coast of the UK. The barge was anchored prior to the collision. The cargo vessel dropped its anchor at about time of the collision. Heavy weather caused both anchors to drag, severing two subsea power cables. The cargo vessel was found to have deficiencies with its weather forecast reception facilities and the barge should not have been allowed to anchor so near the subsea cables.
