USCG – BWMS type-approval update
The US Coast Guard issued a notice stating that it is reviewing applications for USCG ballast water management system (BWMS type-approval from Optimarin, Alfa Laval, and OceanSaver. For each of these systems, additional information has been requested from the manufacturer and/or the independent laboratory. Canada – tug grounding
Transport Canada issued a news release regarding the grounding of the tug Nathan E. Stewart in Seaforth Channel, British Columbia. Among other things, the exemption that allowed the tug and barge to operate in those waters without a pilot from the Pacific Pilotage Authority has been revoked. MREN – Let the BWM games begin In the October 2016 edition of Maritime Reporter and Engineering News, you can find my article entitled Let the BWM games begin. The 2004 Ballast Water Management Convention finally received sufficient ratifications and will enter into force on 8 September 2017. The IMO is scrambling to amend the Convention to address known problems. Meanwhile, the US Coast Guard has finally received applications for ballast water management system (BWMS) type-approvals.
