Senate – bill introduced to allow US-Cuba travel
Senator Flake (R-AZ) introduced a bill (S. 299) to allow travel between the United States and Cuba. The US Coast Guard posted, in a five-part series, a discussion providing guidance on maritime cyber security standards. Part 1 was an introduction by the Deputy Commandant for Operations. Part 2 addressed cyber security risks. Part 3 focused on cyber threats. Part 4 discussed cyber resources available to the maritime community. Part 5 summarized the cyber security issue and its importance to the maritime community. (1/29/15).Malaysia – tanker hijackers arrested
The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre issued an Incident Report [located at http://www.recaap.org/Portals/0/docs/Latest%20IA/2015/Incident%20Update%20Sun%20Birdie%20(29%20Jan%2015).pdf] regarding the chemical tanker Sun Birdie. The tanker was hijacked by nine perpetrators near Tanjung Ayam, Malaysia on 28 January. The owner promptly reported loss of contact with the tanker. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) located and boarded the tanker on 29 January. The crew was unharmed. Seven perpetrators on board were arrested. Two perpetrators had jumped overboard. They were picked up by a passing ship and turned over to the MMEA. (1/30/15).
