CBP – stowaway found in red chili pepper shipment
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a news release stating that during a routine examination of a commercial shipment of red chili peppers at the Columbus, New Mexico port of entry, they discovered a man sprawled out on top of the load. There was a bottle of tequila next to him and he appeared to be highly intoxicated. The individual was promptly returned to Mexico. (9/9/13).
Washington – barge operator fined following oil spill
The Washington Department of Ecology issued a news release stating that Olympic Tug & Barge has been fined $16,500 for an oil spill in Port Angeles on 7 November 2012. The spill occurred when one of the company's fuel barges was overfilled. More than 1,700 gallons of heavy fuel oil spilled onto the deck of the barge, with nearly 50 gallons entering the water. Washington – spill response exercise
The Washington Department of Ecology issued a news release stating that a large-scale oil spill response equipment deployment exercise will be conducted in the San Juan Islands near Rosario Strait on 10 September. (9/9/13).
Canada – fatal helicopter crash in the Arctic
Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada issued a Message of Condolence to the families of Marc Thibault, commanding officer of the Canadian Coast Guard research icebreaker Amundsen; Daniel Dubé, helicopter pilot; and Klaus Hochheim, University of Manitoba scientist. The three individuals died in the crash of a helicopter in the Arctic ice of McClure Strait. (9/10/13).
Northern Sea Route – tanker holed by ice floe
The Russian Northern Sea Route Information Office issued a press release stating that the tanker Nordvik, carrying 4,944 tons of Arctic diesel fuel, was holed when it encountered an ice floe while engaged in unauthorized and unescorted navigation in the Northern Sea Route. The ice penetrated one of the ballast tanks. Water inflow was stopped by setting a cement box in the tank. Another tanker is en route to remove the cargo from the Nordvik. There have been no reports of injury or pollution. (9/9/13).
UK – low-sulphur marine fuel
The UK Department for Transport (DfT) issued a news release stating that UK government officials and industry representatives met in London to discuss the future availability of low-sulphur fuel. It has been recommended that a review of the availability of low-sulphur fuel should commence in January 2015 in order to be prepared for the global target date of 2020 for reduced air emissions.
