NOAA – nominated marine protected areas

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a notice stating that it is seeking comments on 82 marine protected areas (MPAs) that have been nominated for inclusion in the National System of Marine Protected Areas. Comments should be submitted by 22 July.

Australia – using satellites to detect oil spills

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) issued a
media release stating that it is trialing the use of satellites to detect oil spills in Australian waters. (5/21/13).
UK – grounding after gale warnings ignored
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) issued the report of its investigation of the grounding of the cargo ship Carrier at Raynes Jetty in North Wales on 3 April 2012. The grounding occurred after the master decided to finish loading the ship rather than put to sea after receiving a report from the UK Meteorological Office of gale warnings. Report 8/2013 (5/22/13).
