Court – Arctic Ocean drilling permits upheld, again

The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued an amended opinion in the case brought by various environmental advocacy groups against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) challenging the EPA decision to grant air emission permits to Shell Oil for its exploratory drilling operations in the Arctic Ocean. As with the previous opinion, the court upheld the agency decision as not plainly erroneous or inconsistent with the Clean Air Act or implementing regulations.

India & Sri Lanka – fisheries conflict

The Indian Ministry of Defence issued a
press release providing an update on the confrontations between Indian fishermen and units of the Sri Lankan Navy. Sri Lanka asserts that Indian fishermen cross over into Sri Lankan waters. Three Indian fishermen have died in these confrontations over the past four years and hundreds have been detained. (4/22/13).

Lawtext Publishing issued a
notice announcing publication of Shipping, Law and the Marine Environment in the 21st Century. The book contains fourteen separate papers examining emerging challenges for the Law of the Sea. I had an opportunity to examine the book and write a
