House – bill introduced to reform port security programs
clip_image012 Representative Miller (R-MI) introduced a bill (H.R. 4251) to authorize, enhance, and reform certain port security programs through increased efficiency and risk-based coordination within the Department of Homeland Security, and for other purposes. (3/22/12).
Senate – dredging of small ports
clip_image014 Senator Cantwell (D-WA) issued a news release calling for funding for dredging small and low-use ports. These are ports that don’t have enough tonnage to meet the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) threshold to qualify for annual dredging support but represent important economic engines of the communities they serve. (3/22/12).
CRS – Cuba’s offshore oil development
clip_image016 The Congressional Research Service (CRS) issued its report to Congress entitled “Cuba’s Offshore Oil Development”. The report discusses plans for development of Cuba’s offshore oil resources and preparations underway in the United States to respond to any oil spills that might occur in Cuba waters that could impact the US. EC – proposed new rules on ship recycling
clip_image020[1] The European Commission (EC) issued a press release stating that it is proposing new rules to ensure that European ships are only recycled in facilities that are safe for workers and environmentally sound. The proposal, which builds on the Hong Kong Convention, will be discussed by the Council and the European Parliament. (3/23/12). Note: This item was brought to my attention by my good friend John Bennett of Maritime Protective Services.
India – armed guards on merchant ships
clip_image022 The Indian Ministry of Shipping issued a press release stating that all merchant ships have been advised to report the presence of armed guards onboard to the Indian Navy/Indian Coast Guard. (3/19/12). Fonte: Dennis Bryant.
