Gulf of Mexico – partial settlement of oil spill claims 
 There are unofficial reports that BP and numerous private litigants 
have reached a settlement of claims related to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico 
oil spill. BP estimates the settlement will cost approximately $7.8 
billion. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has not posted an official 
comment yet on this development, but the Attorney General for the State 
of Alabama issued a press release
 stating that the settlement between BP and private litigants does not 
impact the governments’ claims against BP and the other defendants for 
economic and environmental damage. (3/3/12). 
UNSC – action to counter piracy in Gulf of Guinea urged 
 The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issued a news release
 urging countries of the region of the Gulf of Guinea to take prompt 
action to develop and implement programs to counter piracy and armed 
robbery at sea. (2/29/12).  
Gulf of Aden – pirate action group disrupted 
 The EU NAVFOR issued a press release
 stating that one of its warships intercepted a hijacked Indian dhow and
 two skiffs that had recently attacked a passing merchant vessel. The 
dhow’s original crew of 25 Indian nationals were being held hostage. The
 two unmanned skiffs were destroyed, but the warship was unable to take 
action directly against the pirates without unacceptable risk to the 
hostages. The pirates used the dhow to escape to the Somali coast.
