Gulf of Mexico – partial settlement of oil spill claims
There are unofficial reports that BP and numerous private litigants
have reached a settlement of claims related to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico
oil spill. BP estimates the settlement will cost approximately $7.8
billion. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has not posted an official
comment yet on this development, but the Attorney General for the State
of Alabama issued a press release
stating that the settlement between BP and private litigants does not
impact the governments’ claims against BP and the other defendants for
economic and environmental damage. (3/3/12).

Gulf of Aden – pirate action group disrupted
The EU NAVFOR issued a press release
stating that one of its warships intercepted a hijacked Indian dhow and
two skiffs that had recently attacked a passing merchant vessel. The
dhow’s original crew of 25 Indian nationals were being held hostage. The
two unmanned skiffs were destroyed, but the warship was unable to take
action directly against the pirates without unacceptable risk to the
hostages. The pirates used the dhow to escape to the Somali coast.
